Postcard from Portland #1
I arrived in rainy Portland several hours ago. I'm delighted with how easy it was to get from the airport to my hostel. I jumped on the MAX light rail, took it through downtown, then transfered to a bus that dropped me off right in front of the place. It took about 40 minutes, cost $1.50 and was a piece of cake, even on a dark, damp night in a city I've never been to before. The city center was quiet, but anyone I asked for help was very friendly, especially the nice Philly-transplant who helped me confirm I was getting on the right bus. The directions I printed out ahead of time from the TriMet Trip Planner were excellent, but it's never a bad idea to double check with a real live local. The free wireless at the hostel puts a big smile on my face, but more on my accomodations after I get some shuteye.

There are some great hostels in Portland... I stayed in one that was the size of a small house. It was almost like a stranger sleepover... we shared bathrooms and everything.
Go to Powell's tonight, get a cup of coffee and a muffin in the cafe, pull out a good book (or laptop) and chill out.

oh, I forgot to mention - right across the street from you, on 32nd just off of Hawthorne, is a totally awesome coffee shop called Chance of Rain. they're funky, they spin house music all night long, and they serve excellent vegan nachos.
