Paula Scher: The Maps

samaArtistic renderings of maps and creative interpretations of our planet are just so cool. If you appreciate art and love to travel as much as I do, you know what I mean. Here's the latest: Darren at The Design Blog (currently soliciting for a new name) points us to a unique art exhibit currently showing at the Maya Stendhal Gallery in NY. From now through December 17, Paula Scher's The Maps will be on display. They look fascinating on the web, so I bet stopping by the gallery for a closeup look would be worth it if you're in the 'hood.

Scher's giant map paintings, although full of familiar place names and boundary lines, are not meant to represent specific locations. From the press release: "Without actually painting any thing, Scher presents a way to think about a country, a continent, a world. What began as a private outpouring of anger with the media has developed into a statement about reporting the truth and showing lands that can never be truly, fully mapped. Hers is an attempt to do justice to the very idea of representing place."
