I got to meet them on Satuday less than 2 miles from the end of the trail!!!
I was camped at Coast Camp in Point Reyes National Sea Shore when I saw them walking by. I knew who they were and stopped them with an overly enthusiastic "Gottawalk!" What an amazing couple. Kudos to them!
I wish I could have walked the last two miles with them (they asked if I wanted to) but I had obligations and couldn't. The short talk definitely made my week though. It shocked even myself how happy it made me to see long distance hikers.
They seemed to be in a little bit of a surreal state. The were happy and ready to relax at home but also a little sad that the journey was over. They also were having a little bit of an anticlimatic/personal ending. They were getting in a day ahead of schedule. They couldn't get a permit for camping so they were planning on sleeping in the parking lot and then being woken up at 3:30am for a 5am TV interview at the beach. They declined my offer to camp at my site. No ranger would throw these people out of the camp!
They were kind of funny though. They said multiple times "gotta get our miles in". Probably their catchphrase and where their name "gottawalk" comes from. :)
