Weekend News

typhoon

Unfortunately, there was lots of disturbing news this weekend, much of it travel-related or directly effecting tourism in certain regions. Terrorism, labor strikes, freakish accidents and natural disasters…it just seemed like a lot as I read the papers and online news sites this evening.

- Three bombings in tourist areas of Bali ignite new fears on the Indonesian island. An exact count of the number killed has not been confirmed.

- El Salvador's highest point, Ilamatepec, erupts, forcing thousands to flee. The volcanic activity has already claimed two lives, as it spews hot mud, ashes and smoke.

- Typhoon Longwang heads for China and the coastal provinces of Fujian and Guangdong, after killing at least one in Taiwan.

- A tour boat capsizes on Lake George in upstate NY, killing 21 people.

- The ports of Corsica have been closed due to labor-dispute strikes, trapping thousands of tourists on the island. Some visitors have been able to get out, but protests and attacks continue.
