Cool or lame? When Celebs Travel
Am I the only one that hates it when celebs do travel shows? Is this irrational to dislike it when Cameron Diaz is overseas with a full camera crew and makes like she's roughing it? I mean, just look at the opening graph of this New York Times piece about her new show "Trippin". She's sitting at the Chateau Marmont hotel in Los Angeles, eating her arugula and proscuitto with her fingers and hawking her new program where she ventures to "wild places" in ecological jeopardy. This is total jealousy, right? I'm pissed that some Hollywood star who makes several orders of magnitude more money than I do gets to traipse around the globe. And it seems to be for a good cause, right? Or is it just kind of lame that celebs take up these causes when all they are, after all, are actors? Help me out. Cool or lame?

I say LAME. In fact, I just posted about it today. Very very lame. http://www.thelooneys.com/blogs/jason/archive/2005/03/30/195.aspx

Lame. Who cares about her impressions of "wild places"?

I say cool. Anytime a celeb can bring attention to some forgotten corner of the world, and perhaps bring some tourism and dollars, that is good for the country. Also, I heard she slept in a tent in Nepal and had to fight the spiders in the outhouse. She roughed it, to some degree. Besides, I like her blue eyes.

Im insanely jealous- I think she should take a couple of bloggers and aspiring travel writers along next season, make it a reality show as well.

Totally lame. Face it, she's nothing except a celebrity...a pretty face that people pay attention to. She has no credibility or heft with these issues. It merely perpetuates the notion that stars actually MEAN something.

Sigh. I sat down and watched the series premeire and WANTED to like the show. I WANTED VERY MUCH to like this exploration and engaged travel regardless of the fact that it was Cameron Diaz and her pals.
But the beauty of Nepal and how much the environment is in jeopardy there became almost lost in Redman's constant swearing. It was almost like, "Nepal and the most beautiful thing, , , .
And of course there was Cameron Diaz's charming comment, "See, it all goes back to poo."
So I sigh again and cast my vote as lame. And yes I am jealous too.

I agree it's good to bring attention to plces, but in all honesty, I think celebs actually lessen the importance of a message. Their celebrity, you might say, is the central message, not that cause they are pushing. Also, it's hard for people to take celebs seriosuly as viable authorities on an important subject. I watched the new PBS environmental series recently with Ed Norton and I was constantly distracted by his silly poses and extremme close ups.

COOL. Who out there wouldnt give their left nut to be in her shoes? Anyone who says lame is probably just jealous. At least she isnt using her celebrity to partake in a decades-long degenerative nut-eating couch quest like Marlon Brando.

Of course I'd give a left (or right) nut to be in her shoes, or some other place for that matter. But my exasperation (and, yes, jealousy) with the project is celebs and their causes. It just seems to trivialize these important issues maing them so "hip" and celeb driven. I guess it's more just my rejection of the whole celeb culture than anything...a wish we'd care less about what these people think about issues totally unrelated to their latest release.

OK, I watched this last night. Drew barrymore in Chile. I was right. This is lame. The show was shallow and stupid,. Why in the world is watching stars muddle through an outdoors experience at all good entertainment. They camp, they eat sea urchins, they rue the fact that a highway might go through some Chilean land. Sorry, Lame lame lame.
