Lake Atitlan in Guatemala
Most people have probably never even heard of Lake Atitlan. Aldous Huxley, when he visited there, called it "the most beautiful lake in the world." Perhaps he was on soma. I only know it because I was traveling through Guatemala several years ago, and a girl I met told me it was gorgeous, that, "Oh my God," I absolutely "HAD to go". I didn't. But that doesn't mean I don't want to. And reading about it in the New York Times made me want to go even more. As the article points out the lake is a place still untrampled by tourism and there are ample things to do there from outdoor stuff to relaxing and hanging out, as the nearby volcano looms over the lake, and you, like a sentinel.

alas, the lake atitlan region has little to no tourist police coverage, and as a result it can be a dangerous place to head out on your own. keep your eyes and ears open, and ask around before heading out into the wild on your own.
i lived there safely for two weeks several months ago, and am going back tomorrow for two months. but i also didn't charge off into the jungle to climb a volcano on my own. i typically got in to my house by sunset, and only went on trips outside the city either by the usual tourist routes (boat, chicken bus), or with a local who knew the area.

Nice comment, john. I suppose it's always a good idea to keep your eyes oppen when you are out traveling. Eager to hear about your adventure!

I'm interested in buying a lot, or something on Lake Atitlan. What does one do, to get a title? What procedures, government or otherwise exist for guaranteeing title, or boundaries?
I'll probably make a trip there again in Xmas and take a look around on other sides of the Lake than Panajchel.
