Lonely Planet Founders
An interview with Lonely Planet founder
Tony Wheeler. He is certainly one of the heroes of the travel writing world. His first book, Across Asia on the
Cheap was his way to tell people what he'd done and where, as he traveled all those years ago. He and
his wife also wrote South-East Asia on a Shoestring, known as the Yellow Bible. The empire these two have built has had
a massive, if unquantifiable, impact on travelers everywhere. In both a good and bad way. Face it, traveling with an LP
guide or the many imitators since, is a prereq for making your way around a new country. But on the other hand, very
often once a place makes an LP guide, it's unique character is gone forever. Regardless, the Wheelers are towering
figures in the travel industry.

Tom Wheeler is my hero! Wow, what a life and what a job. If he's ready to retire, I'd be happy to take over. I have dozens of the Lonely Planet books and rely on them for all my travel needs. When you're done with your trip, they're great reference books or can be passed on to others who yearn to travel. I've lived in 4 countries and have visited 22 - looking to do more to use my nature photography skills and creative writing skills. They're great books for avid and novice travelers!

LP is my bible!! I can just buy them for the heck of it - just becuase it's great reading and a perfect fantasy trip.
Sure, all around the world, the LP people run across one another but isn't that part of the fun. Personally, I take snippets out of it when travelling - even choose which places NOT to go to.
